| Worlds Update #0- Rt 3 Wave training sessions | ||
Time to get some World Championship fever going. Update #0- before I've even left for Thun. Getting ready for Worlds is a long process, and this doesn't even cover the whole process. I guess that really goes back months. But for the past two weeks, getting ready to go to Thun has been the major focus. I decided I haven't been getting enough wave time recently, so I picked out the closest wave that was the most like Thun, loaded up the van, and headed there- Rt 3 wave in Watertown, NY. US Team members Elaine Campbell and Jordan Poffenberger were also there training.![]() Elaine Blunting ![]() Jordan on Rt 3 ![]() C-1 blunting ![]() Elaine working on her cleans My strategy for training for something like Worlds is to split time between working on individual moves, and working on competition rides- figuring what the most efficient order for getting the most moves thrown in the shortest amount of time. It's especially important for the OC-1 boat, since the boat takes on water, some moves are easier to throw dry, and some moves make the boat take on more water. I also had to split time between the three disciplines I'm competeing in- Squirt, C-1 and OC-1. ![]() OC-1 Blunt ![]() Crossbow! ![]() Winding up for the blunt ![]() My knees hurt. Long days of training get tiring, and it can be hard to maintain focus. It's easy to lose focus on the bigger picture and get frustrated with things that aren't going the way you want. Crucial to the training process is to mix things up and make sure it's fun. Stephen Wright stopped by, and brought a river board with him, which proved to be a welcome distraction. ![]() Stephen shredding on the riverboard. ![]() Inspired by the SUP movement, I decided to try out stand up canoe surfing. It went pretty well. After four solid days of training, mock comp rides, lots of video review, etc, the water came up, and it was time to head home and get things together and packed up for the trip. We fly out tomorrow, and the mountain of gear is alternately growing larger, and shrinking as it gets packed into boat bags. ![]() Two out of my three boats I'm taking with me. The other aspect of getting ready for Worlds is funding the trip. Sponsorship dollars are slim these days- I've got to thank my local kayak shop, Starrk-Moon, for helping fund my adventure. USA Freestyle Kayaking is doing what they can with limited resources- which covers entry fees to worlds, and the rest of the cost is on the team members. You can help the team if you're so inclined. We have a fundraising program based on how many medals the team wins. See the USA Freestyle Kayaking website for more details. |
