The perfect Storm Session
Ooh, way over due for an update.  It's been a pretty mellow spring for me lately.  Not much rain, a lot of Scudders sessions, Holtwood hasn't run much.  We finally got some rain last week, and after a great weekend at Scudders, I got out to Holtwood for a perfect level Storm Hole session with Garrett Boop.

Storm Hole.

It was threatening to rain, spitting a little bit, and overcast, but we decided to bring the camera anyway.  I'm glad we did.  The sky occasionally cleared up a bit, lighting up the river with the warm, soft light that lights up the Mica flakes in the rocks.  It had been a while since I've been out on the Susquehanna, and even longer since I've been out in this kind of light.  It makes for great pictures, and quickly reminded me why I love this place so much.

Feeling right at home, playin'.  I think we all have river or playspot that, through the years, continues to hold something special for us.  For me, Storm Hole is one of those places.  Getting out there on a warm spring evening, even with a cold front moving in and being sore from three days of hard playing before hand is one of those "gotta do it" things for me.

Storm Hole loop.  There's no eddy access at Storm, so you have to walk back up between rides.  The upside is that it makes it easy to trade off taking pictures.

I love the contrast in this shot between the gray sky and water and the bright boat.

See Boop Loop.

Loop, Boop, loop!

There's part of dock washed up on the island, makes for cool shots.

Another loop.

We played around with a few different angles.  I really like this one, with the power pole from the powerhouse in the background.

The sun poked out for a few minutes, lighting everything up.  I tried to cartwheel far enough up on the foampile that it was visible, but flushed after a few ends, right about the same time the memory card in the camera filled up.  Somehow everything came together though.  This is my new favorite kayak shot.

We sessioned Storm hard, then headed down to Playspot as the sun was setting.  Playspot is possibly one of the best and most frustating spots for loops anywhere.  When you hit it right, it launches you into an auto-loop, but it's a finicky spot to hit right.

Garret looping in Playspot.

Sunset on the Susquehanna.

The moon was nearly full, giving us enought extra light for a few extra minutes of play.We played as long as we could, then made the long ferry back to shore, leaving just enough daylight to get back to the road.  As I walked back up the road to the put-in, I noticed that even with the glow of the moon over my shoulder, the opressive cold blue light that pervades this place on winter evenings has given way to a warmer, softer dusk.  Spring is good.
